Some of the Biggest Events in 2020 & Your Potential Holiday Destinations

And so the year has begun, and with it a brand new decade. With so much going on right now, from the US-China trade war, Brexit to the ongoing bushfire threatening Australia since September 2019, and the recent strikes by Donald Trump and Iran, we’re not lacking drama whenever we read the news. The only point of difference is how “eventful” those news will be.

2020 is already well underway, have you got your year planned out?

In 2020, while admittedly many a nation and organisation will attempt to hold monumental events to be part of history-making, there are 3 unique global events that we should remember this year. They are:

1. Visit Malaysia 2020 – Announced to be cancelled on 18 March 2020 due to Covid-19.

Due to the global pandemic of Covid-19, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Malaysia, YB Dato’ Sri Hjh. Nancy Bt. Shukri has announced Visit Malaysia 2020 will be cancelled. No details about whether the Visit Malaysia campaign will be staged at another date but for the time being, the most pressing agenda is to help beat the widespread Covid-19 that has affected everyone globally.

This is a year-long campaign hosted by the tropical country of Malaysia to woo tourists from around the world. Into its 5th campaign ever since her pioneering effort in 1990, this installment is held with expectations to welcome 30 million tourists spending RM100 billion in tourism receipts.

Located in Southeast Asia, Malaysia is divided into East and West Malaysia where the former borders Indonesia in Kalimantan of Borneo and the latter sandwiched between Thailand and Singapore. Kuala Lumpur, the capital city of Malaysia, famed for Petronas Twin Towers or otherwise also known as KLCC (Kuala Lumpur City Centre), is situated in West Malaysia and it’s the main gateway into the country’s commercial hub.

Malaysia prides itself as “Truly Asia” given its multicultural populace and a melting pot of diverse hereditary backgrounds.

From food, people, cultural practices to faith-based worships, they come in stacks of variety that keeps the culinary fares and thoroughfares delightfully busy. Not a single moment is spared from excitement unless you’re at the pristine forest reserves or by the sunny coastlines. Life as a tourist in Malaysia can be rather eventful.

Judging from the way the stadium has been built, which is ahead of time, and the way her citizens contributes to the winners medals by donating their metal wastes from mobile phones, computers and other eligible gadgetry, this is going to be the most sustainable Olympics ever.

Its Games Vision is encapsulated into 3 concise themes:

  • Achieving Personal Best
  • Unity in Diversity
  • Connecting to Tomorrow

Happening from 24 July to 9 August 2020, you might want to check if there’s still rooms and tickets for you to get there to watch your favourite sporting athlete battling it out for the spirit of sports and goodwill.

ATTENTION MARKETERS: Especially to all the marketing professionals out there who are thinking of leveraging the greatest sporting event of 2020 to help your clients or your organisations to reach for gold, please be reminded that the organiser has set out a complete Brand Protection guide that stipulates what constitutes infringements of its Intellectual Properties and what are allowed. 3. World Expo Dubai 2020

Did you know that the Eiffel Tower was unveiled to the world during a World’s Fair in 1889? That’s right my friends, this is how significant the World Fair or known outside America as the World Expo, (or even shortened now to just Expo), can be to human civilisation.

Eiffel Tower, a World’s Fair structure completed in record time of less than 3 years that still stands proudly in Paris.

Back in 2012, I’ve had the privilege to visit the World Expo Shanghai. Without knowing what to expect, I went there thinking I could cover the entire expo but I was wrong. To visit and walk the entire World Expo ground according to a friend based in Shanghai then, it would take at least 4 or 5 days. Why? Because as its name suggests, it’s an exhibition of the world. What it means is that every participating nation will erect a structure or at the very least take up a space to showcase what their country is like. Everything from the colours of the natives to the cultural language to economic contributors, they are displayed there for the world audience.

A quick google search that shows the unique structures at the Shanghai World Expo in 2010. The unmistakable being the China Pavilion in red.

My visit to Shanghai’s World Expo was so tiring I took a short nap around tea time before continuing my visit to the rest of the sites. But at the end of my visit around dinner time, I was told, I’ve only covered a maximum of 20% of the Expo ground.

Another quick google search. Notice how the structures are presented in unique architectures? It's truly an eye opener.

Expect nothing less in Dubai, after all they have reimagined their country’s economic model by turning deserts into a tourism paradise and now that the entire city is built, one can only imagine how far the imagination will take them this time.
