THE FOOD HERITAGE OF PENANG

Penang : When Captain Francis Light set foot on the island in 1786, he gestured towards the ground and asked the welcoming natives for the name of the place. Strewn where he stood were beetle nuts, so the natives aptly replied “PINANG”.  This was how Penang gets its name. So the story goes!

By 1832, Penang became part of the British Straits Settlement with Malacca and Singapore. Its location at the entrance to the Straits of Malacca made it an ideal entrepot for traders from Arabia, India, Indonesia, Siam, Burma and the early colonists, the English, Portuguese and the Dutch.

Penang thus became a cultural melting pot, exposing the lifestyle and cuisine from each community.
